Painting Description
"View of the Elephant Fountain at the Place de la Bastille c.1805-1810" is a historical design concept by the French architect Jean Antoine Alavoine. The work represents Alavoine's vision for a grand monument in the form of an elephant, which was intended to be erected at the Place de la Bastille in Paris. The concept emerged in the early 19th century, during a period of significant urban renewal and monumental construction in the French capital under the direction of Napoleon Bonaparte.
Alavoine's design was inspired by a proposal initially conceived by Napoleon, who, after his campaign in Egypt, wanted to commemorate his military achievements with an elephant fountain that would symbolize power and victory. The envisioned structure was to be made of bronze and would stand at an imposing height, serving both as a fountain and as a symbol of the new regime's strength and prosperity.
The "View of the Elephant Fountain" is not only a testament to Alavoine's architectural ingenuity but also reflects the broader cultural and political context of post-revolutionary France. The design includes intricate details of the elephant and the fountain's decorative elements, showcasing Alavoine's skill in combining aesthetic appeal with symbolic meaning.
Although the monument was never fully realized in bronze as Alavoine had intended, a full-scale plaster model was constructed and stood on the site from 1814 until its demolition in 1846. The plaster version became a notable Parisian landmark in its own right, albeit one that was subject to deterioration and public ridicule over the years. Today, Alavoine's "View of the Elephant Fountain" remains an important historical document, illustrating the ambitious urban projects of the Napoleonic era and the creative vision of one of its prominent architects.
