Painting Description
"Lady Writing a Letter with Her Maid" is a celebrated 17th-century painting by the Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer, also known as Jan Vermeer van Delft. Created circa 1670–1671, this oil on canvas masterpiece exemplifies Vermeer's meticulous attention to the effects of light and shadow, as well as his keen observation of domestic life. The painting measures 71.1 cm × 58.4 cm (28.0 in × 23.0 in) and is currently housed in the National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin.
The composition depicts an elegant young woman dressed in a yellow jacket adorned with ermine trim, engrossed in writing a letter at a table in a well-appointed room. Her maid, dressed in a simpler attire, stands behind her, seemingly on the lookout, which suggests a narrative of secrecy and anticipation. The presence of the maid not only adds a social dimension to the scene but also contributes to the narrative tension, hinting at the possible confidential nature of the letter.
Vermeer's use of light, coming from the left side of the painting, illuminates the writing lady's face and the luxurious fabrics, enhancing the textures and the three-dimensionality of the space. The map on the wall, the detailed depiction of the furniture, and the carefully rendered objects on the table are indicative of Vermeer's precision and his desire to convey the material culture of his time.
"Lady Writing a Letter with Her Maid" is a prime example of Vermeer's genre scenes, which often feature women in various states of contemplation or domestic activity. The painting's intimate atmosphere and the psychological depth of its subjects are characteristic of Vermeer's oeuvre, making it a significant work in the study of Dutch Golden Age painting. Its provenance includes the collection of Sir Alfred Beit, from whom it was stolen twice in the 1970s and 1980s but subsequently recovered. The artwork's enduring appeal lies in its quiet drama and the timeless quality of its depiction of human emotion and interaction.
