Painting Description
The Ghent Altarpiece, also known as "The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb," is a large and complex 15th-century polyptych altarpiece in St Bavo's Cathedral, Ghent, Belgium. It is considered one of the foremost masterpieces of Early Netherlandish painting. The work was started by Hubert van Eyck, who painted the framework, but it was completed by his younger brother Jan van Eyck after Hubert's death in 1426. The altarpiece was completed in 1432.
The altarpiece is renowned for its intricate detail, use of iconography, and pioneering use of oil paint, which allowed Jan van Eyck to achieve unprecedented detail and luminosity in his work. The piece is also notable for its complex and innovative composition, which includes numerous panels that are hinged and can be opened or closed to reveal different scenes.
One of the panels, often referred to as "The Soldiers of Christ," depicts knights and soldiers who are considered to be Christian warriors. This panel forms part of the lower register of the opened view of the altarpiece and is located on the outer wings. It shows the Just Judges on the left and the Knights of Christ on the right, riding forth in a stately procession. The figures are believed to represent the forces of good, symbolically protecting the sacred scene at the center of the altarpiece, which is the Adoration of the Lamb of God.
The Ghent Altarpiece has a tumultuous history, having survived the Protestant Reformation, the French Revolution, and both World Wars. It has been stolen several times, most notably by the Nazis during World War II, and has been the subject of numerous restoration campaigns, the most recent of which was completed in 2020. The altarpiece's influence on both the Northern Renaissance and later art is profound, and it continues to be studied for its artistic and historical significance.
