Painting Description
The Ghent Altarpiece, also known as the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, is a complex polyptych panel painting created by the Early Netherlandish master Jan van Eyck and his brother Hubert van Eyck. Although Hubert is often credited with the conception of the piece, it is Jan who is celebrated for the execution of the majority of the panels. The altarpiece was completed in 1432 and is housed in the Saint Bavo Cathedral in Ghent, Belgium. It is widely regarded as one of the most significant works of art in European history due to its intricate detail, pioneering use of oil paint, and complex iconography.
One of the panels within this altarpiece, "The Killing of Abel," is part of the lower register of the closed view of the polyptych. This panel, along with others depicting scenes of the Annunciation, the original sin, and the just judges, forms a narrative sequence when the altarpiece is closed. "The Killing of Abel" specifically illustrates the biblical story of Cain slaying his brother Abel, an event from the Book of Genesis that symbolizes the introduction of violence and death into human history following the Fall of Man.
Jan van Eyck's rendering of "The Killing of Abel" is characterized by his meticulous attention to detail and his ability to convey narrative and emotion through his figures and landscapes. The panel showcases his skill in handling light and texture, creating a vivid and dramatic scene that engages the viewer both spiritually and visually. The altarpiece's overall themes of redemption and salvation are echoed in this panel, as the story of Abel's sacrifice prefigures the New Testament's narrative of Christ's sacrifice for humanity's sins.
The Ghent Altarpiece has been the subject of numerous studies and has a storied history, including several thefts and a significant restoration project that began in 2012. "The Killing of Abel" panel contributes to the altarpiece's reputation as a masterpiece of Northern Renaissance art and remains a subject of fascination for art historians, scholars, and the public alike.
