Painting Description
The Ghent Altarpiece - The Just Judges (1427-30) is a panel of the larger Ghent Altarpiece, also known as The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, created by the Early Netherlandish master Jan Van Eyck. The Ghent Altarpiece, considered one of the most significant and influential paintings in all of Western art, is a complex polyptych work composed of twelve panels, eight of which are hinged shutters. The Just Judges panel is located on the lower left of the opened altarpiece.
The Just Judges depicts a group of noblemen and knights on horseback, symbolizing the just judges of biblical and secular history. The figures are portrayed in a realistic and detailed manner, a characteristic of Van Eyck's style, which was groundbreaking in the use of oil paint to achieve minute detail and a high level of realism.
The panel is also known for its historical significance due to its theft in 1934 from Saint Bavo's Cathedral in Ghent, Belgium. Despite numerous investigations and theories, the panel remains missing to this day, making it one of the most famous unsolved cases of art theft. A reproduction currently takes its place in the altarpiece.
The Ghent Altarpiece as a whole and The Just Judges panel, in particular, are considered pivotal works in the Northern Renaissance, demonstrating a shift towards realism and away from the stylized figures of the Middle Ages, and influencing countless artists in the centuries to follow.
