Painting Description
The Ghent Altarpiece, also known as the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, is a large and complex 15th-century polyptych altarpiece in St Bavo's Cathedral, Ghent, Belgium. It was begun by the painter Hubert van Eyck, who was commissioned to start the work, and upon his death in 1426, it was completed by his younger brother Jan van Eyck. The altarpiece was finished and installed in its chapel in 1432. It is considered a masterpiece of European art and one of the world's treasures.
The panel known as "The Holy Pilgrims" is part of the lower register of the opened view of the altarpiece. Painted between 1427 and 1430 by Jan van Eyck, this panel features the figures of two male saints, commonly identified as Saints Julian and Alexis, who are depicted as pilgrims. They are characterized by their pilgrim's staffs, scallop shells, and wide-brimmed hats, which are traditional attributes of pilgrims in Christian iconography. The saints are shown in a highly detailed landscape, which exemplifies Jan van Eyck's skill in rendering naturalistic details and his use of oil paint to achieve a variety of textures and effects.
The Ghent Altarpiece is renowned for its intricate iconography, complex composition, and the use of oil painting techniques that allow for a high degree of detail and luminosity. The altarpiece's panels contain inscriptions, figures of saints, prophets, and angels, and a central representation of the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, which is surrounded by various groups of figures, including martyrs, hermits, and holy pilgrims, among others.
"The Holy Pilgrims" panel contributes to the overall narrative of the altarpiece, which combines Old Testament prophecy with New Testament fulfillment, and is a key component in the ensemble that articulates the themes of salvation, redemption, and divine revelation. The Ghent Altarpiece has survived numerous thefts and wartime threats and has been the subject of extensive conservation efforts to preserve it for future generations. Its influence on both the Northern Renaissance and the development of oil painting technique is immeasurable, and it continues to be studied and admired for its beauty, complexity, and historical significance.
