Painting Description
The Ghent Altarpiece, also known as the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, is a large and complex 15th-century polyptych altarpiece in St Bavo's Cathedral, Ghent, Belgium. It is considered one of the masterpieces of European art and one of the world's treasures. The altarpiece was painted by the Early Netherlandish painters Hubert and Jan van Eyck, with the majority of the work attributed to Jan van Eyck after Hubert's death in 1426. Completed in 1432, the altarpiece represents the pinnacle of the Northern Renaissance with its detailed iconography, use of perspective, and vibrant color palette.
One of the most notable panels of the Ghent Altarpiece is the depiction of St. John the Baptist, which dates from 1425-29. This panel is part of the lower register of the closed view of the altarpiece and is located on the left wing. St. John the Baptist is portrayed in a highly realistic manner, a hallmark of Jan van Eyck's technique. He is depicted in a contemplative pose, with a lamb, symbolizing Christ, at his side, referencing his role in the biblical narrative as the precursor to Jesus and the one who baptized Him.
The panel of St. John the Baptist is renowned for its exquisite detail and use of light, which creates a sense of depth and realism. Van Eyck's mastery in rendering textures, such as the fur of the lamb and the hair and skin of the saint, is evident. The saint's gaze is directed towards the central panel of the closed altarpiece, where the Annunciation is taking place, thus connecting the Old Testament prophet with the New Testament narrative.
The Ghent Altarpiece has been the subject of numerous studies and has a storied history, including several thefts and a complex conservation history. The panel of St. John the Baptist, along with the rest of the altarpiece, underwent extensive restoration work that was completed in 2020, revealing the original vibrancy and detail that had been obscured by centuries of overpaint and varnish. The restored panel now continues to captivate viewers with its intricate symbolism and the virtuosity of Jan van Eyck's brushwork.
