Painting Description
The Ghent Altarpiece, also known as the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, is a large and complex 15th-century polyptych altarpiece in St Bavo's Cathedral, Ghent, Belgium. It was begun by the painter Hubert van Eyck, who was commissioned by Jodocus Vijd and his wife Elisabeth Borluut in 1425, and upon Hubert's death in 1426, it was completed by his younger brother Jan van Eyck. The altarpiece was finished and installed in 1432. It is considered a masterpiece of European art and one of the world's treasures.
The Singing Angels (detail 2) is a particular segment of this renowned work, located on the upper register of the opened altarpiece's central axis. This detail showcases Jan van Eyck's extraordinary ability to depict figures with a sense of individuality and detail. The angels are depicted in a heavenly choir, each angel intricately rendered with a unique facial expression and posture, suggesting the act of singing. They are dressed in sumptuously detailed ecclesiastical vestments that reflect the light and showcase Van Eyck's skill in rendering different textures and materials.
The Singing Angels are part of a larger ensemble that includes musical angels playing instruments, all surrounding the central figure of God Almighty. The attention to detail in the angels' features, clothing, and the musical instruments they hold is characteristic of Jan van Eyck's technique, which combines a meticulous approach to naturalism with rich symbolism. The use of oil paints allows for a luminosity and intricacy that was revolutionary at the time, contributing to the altarpiece's reputation as a pivotal work in the development of Northern Renaissance art.
The Ghent Altarpiece has been the subject of numerous studies and has a complex history, including thefts and various relocations during times of conflict, most notably during World War II. The Singing Angels (detail 2) continues to be a focal point for art historians and enthusiasts, reflecting the devotional practices of the time and the transformative impact of Jan van Eyck's artistic innovations.
