Painting Description
The Ghent Altarpiece, also known as the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, is a large and complex 15th-century polyptych altarpiece in St Bavo's Cathedral, Ghent, Belgium. It was begun by the painter Hubert van Eyck, who was commissioned by Jodocus Vijd and his wife Elisabeth Borluut in 1425, and was completed by his younger brother Jan van Eyck after Hubert's death in 1426. The altarpiece was installed in the cathedral in 1432. One of the most significant and influential paintings in Western art, it is renowned for its intricate detail, use of iconography, and pioneering use of oil paint.
The panel featuring the Prophet Zacharias is one of the lower register panels on the exterior of the altarpiece, which are visible when the altarpiece is closed. This particular panel depicts the Prophet Zacharias, who is traditionally recognized as the father of John the Baptist. In the painting, Zacharias is shown reading or writing a text, which is likely a reference to his role as a prophet and his contribution to the Old Testament. The figure is rendered with meticulous attention to detail, a hallmark of Jan van Eyck's technique, from the texture of his fur-lined robe to the realism of his aged face.
The Ghent Altarpiece has been the subject of numerous studies and has a rich history, including several thefts and a significant amount of damage over the centuries, with various panels having been dispersed at different times. The panel of the Prophet Zacharias, like the rest of the altarpiece, has been the focus of extensive conservation efforts. Its significance lies not only in its artistic mastery but also in its historical and religious importance, serving as a key piece of visual theology that was intended to educate and inspire the faithful.
Jan van Eyck's contribution to the Ghent Altarpiece, including the Prophet Zacharias panel, is celebrated for its innovative use of oil paint, which allowed for unprecedented clarity and luminosity. His technique has been studied extensively and continues to influence artists and attract scholars and art enthusiasts to this day. The Ghent Altarpiece remains a masterpiece of Northern Renaissance art and a testament to the Van Eyck brothers' extraordinary skill and vision.
