Painting Description
The Ghent Altarpiece, also known as the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, is a large and complex 15th-century polyptych altarpiece in St Bavo's Cathedral, Ghent, Belgium. It is considered one of the masterpieces of European art and one of the world's treasures. The altarpiece was painted by the brothers Hubert and Jan van Eyck, completed in 1432. Among its many panels, it features the figures of the Prophet Zacharias and the Angel of the Annunciation, which are integral components of the altarpiece's intricate theological narrative and iconography.
The panel depicting the Prophet Zacharias is part of the lower register of the closed view of the altarpiece. Zacharias, an Old Testament figure, is shown in a moment of contemplation or reading, often interpreted as a representation of the prophecy or the anticipation of the coming of Christ. The panel is a testament to Jan van Eyck's skill in rendering textures and details, with Zacharias's richly decorated robes and the realism of his aged features being particularly noteworthy.
Adjacent to Zacharias, in the corresponding panel, is the Angel of the Annunciation, which forms a diptych with the figure of the Virgin Mary on the opposite wing. This panel depicts the angel Gabriel in the moment of announcing to Mary that she will bear the Son of God, a pivotal event in Christian theology known as the Annunciation. The angel is depicted with a serene expression, rich garments, and delicate wings, all rendered with the meticulous attention to detail characteristic of Jan van Eyck's technique.
Together, these panels not only serve as a prelude to the open view of the altarpiece, which reveals the grand and complex scene of the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, but also encapsulate the themes of prophecy and fulfillment that are central to Christian doctrine. The Ghent Altarpiece's Prophet Zacharias and Angel of the Annunciation are celebrated for their artistic excellence and their role in the unfolding narrative of the altarpiece, which has been a subject of admiration, study, and restoration efforts for centuries.
