Painting Description
The Ghent Altarpiece, also known as the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, is a monumental polyptych painting created by the Early Netherlandish master Jan van Eyck and his brother Hubert van Eyck. Completed in 1432, it is widely considered one of the most significant works of the Northern Renaissance. The altarpiece is renowned for its intricate detail, use of oil paints, and complex iconography. It is housed in the Saint Bavo Cathedral in Ghent, Belgium.
One of the panels of the Ghent Altarpiece features the Prophet Micheas, who is depicted as one of the sibyls and prophets that line the upper register of the closed view of the altarpiece. This panel, along with its counterpart, Mary of the Annunciation, forms part of a series that foretells the coming of Christ. The Prophet Micheas is shown in a seated position, holding a scroll with a Latin inscription from his biblical prophecy, which foretells the birth of Christ in Bethlehem.
Directly facing Micheas is the panel depicting Mary of the Annunciation, which is part of the same series. In this panel, Mary is shown at the moment of the Annunciation, when the Angel Gabriel announces to her that she will bear the Son of God. Mary is depicted with a humble and contemplative expression, reading from a prayer book. The intricate details of her clothing and surroundings, as well as the use of light and shadow, are characteristic of Jan van Eyck's masterful technique.
Both panels are executed with the meticulous attention to detail that is characteristic of Jan van Eyck's work. The figures are rendered with a high degree of realism, and the use of light and texture gives the paintings a three-dimensional quality. The panels are also notable for their symbolic elements, which have been the subject of extensive scholarly interpretation.
The Ghent Altarpiece has been the subject of numerous studies and has a rich history, including theft and subsequent recovery during World War II. The panels of the Prophet Micheas and Mary of the Annunciation contribute to the overall narrative and theological complexity of the altarpiece, making it a masterpiece of religious art and a treasure of Western painting.
