Painting Description
The Ghent Altarpiece, also known as the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, is a large and complex 15th-century polyptych altarpiece in St Bavo's Cathedral, Ghent, Belgium. It is considered a masterpiece of European art and one of the world's treasures. The altarpiece was started by the painter Hubert van Eyck, who was commissioned to create it in 1425, but it was his younger brother Jan van Eyck who completed the majority of the panels and is often credited as the primary artist. The altarpiece was completed in 1432.
One of the central panels of the Ghent Altarpiece is "God Almighty," painted in 1426-27. This panel features a majestic representation of God, depicted as a king or emperor, seated on a throne. He is adorned in elaborate, regal attire, including a crown and a richly decorated cloak. The figure of God is portrayed with a solemn and serene expression, holding a scepter in one hand and giving a sign of blessing with the other. The panel is remarkable for its intricate detail, use of color, and the innovative use of light and shadow that Jan van Eyck is known for.
The Ghent Altarpiece as a whole is renowned for its intricate symbolism, realistic representation of figures, and the use of oil paint, which was a relatively new medium at the time. The altarpiece's panels contain inscriptions that identify the various figures and scenes depicted. The "God Almighty" panel is particularly significant for its central position in the upper register of the opened altarpiece, where it is flanked by panels of the Virgin Mary and John the Baptist, and it is directly above the central panel of the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb.
Over the centuries, the Ghent Altarpiece has survived numerous thefts and wartime threats, and it has undergone several restoration campaigns, the most recent of which was completed in 2020. The "God Almighty" panel, like the rest of the altarpiece, has been the subject of extensive study and admiration, contributing to Jan van Eyck's reputation as one of the most significant and influential Northern Renaissance artists.
