Painting Description
The Ghent Altarpiece, also known as the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, is a large and complex 15th-century polyptych altarpiece in St Bavo's Cathedral, Ghent, Belgium. It was begun by the painter Hubert van Eyck, who was commissioned by Jodocus Vijd and his wife Elisabeth Borluut in 1425, and upon Hubert's death in 1426, it was completed by his younger brother Jan van Eyck. The altarpiece was installed in the cathedral's chapel for its consecration in 1432. It is considered a masterpiece of European art and one of the world's treasures.
The panel "Angels Playing Music" is one of the upper register panels of the opened altarpiece, which is displayed during feast days. This particular panel is renowned for its intricate detail and the skillful depiction of the angels' expressions as they play their instruments. The angels are shown in a heavenly realm, each playing a different musical instrument, and their garments are rendered with meticulous attention to the textures and folds of the fabric. The music-making angels are part of a larger ensemble of panels that celebrate the heavenly liturgy and the glory of God.
Jan van Eyck's mastery of oil painting techniques is evident in the luminosity of the colors and the realism of the figures and objects. The panel is a testament to the Northern Renaissance's emphasis on observation and the portrayal of figures with individuality and emotion. The altarpiece as a whole, and the "Angels Playing Music" panel in particular, have been the subject of extensive art historical research, and they have influenced generations of artists.
The Ghent Altarpiece has survived numerous thefts and wartime threats over the centuries, and it has been the focus of several restoration campaigns, the most recent of which began in 2012 and revealed the original vibrancy of van Eyck's palette. The "Angels Playing Music" panel continues to captivate viewers with its divine harmony and exquisite craftsmanship, embodying the spiritual and artistic aspirations of the early 15th century.
