Painting Description
The Ghent Altarpiece, also known as the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, is a complex polyptych panel painting created by the Early Netherlandish master Jan van Eyck and his brother Hubert van Eyck. Although there is some debate regarding the extent of each brother's contribution, it is generally agreed that the work was begun by Hubert and completed by Jan. The altarpiece was commissioned by the wealthy merchant and financier Jodocus Vijd and his wife Elisabeth Borluut for the Saint Bavo Cathedral in Ghent, Belgium, where it remains a significant piece of early Northern Renaissance art.
Completed in 1432, the Ghent Altarpiece is renowned for its intricate detail, use of color, and pioneering use of oil paint, which allowed for unprecedented clarity and permanence in the hues. The work consists of twelve panels, eight of which are hinged shutters that display different scenes when closed or open. When fully opened, the central panel reveals the iconic "Adoration of the Lamb," a complex and symbolically rich depiction of the Lamb of God being worshipped by groups of figures from the Old and New Testaments, as well as representatives of the Church and various states of Christian life.
The Lamb, which stands on an altar in a heavenly meadow, is surrounded by angels and is being adored by a diverse congregation, including prophets, apostles, martyrs, hermits, and pilgrims. The scene is set within a larger panorama that includes the Fountain of Life and a landscape filled with additional worshippers approaching the sacred event. Above the central panel, the Deity is flanked by the Virgin Mary and John the Baptist, with Adam and Eve depicted in the panels to the far left and right.
The Ghent Altarpiece has been the subject of numerous studies and writings, not only for its artistic significance but also for its complex iconography and theological implications. It has survived a turbulent history, including thefts and various relocations during times of conflict, most notably during World War II. The altarpiece has been the focus of extensive conservation efforts, revealing even more about the techniques and materials used by the Van Eyck brothers. Its influence on both contemporary and later artists has been profound, and it continues to be a focal point for art historical research and public fascination.
