Painting Description
The Ghent Altarpiece, also known as the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, is a large and complex 15th-century polyptych altarpiece in St Bavo's Cathedral, Ghent, Belgium. It was completed by the Early Flemish painters Jan van Eyck and his brother Hubert van Eyck, who is believed to have started the work. The altarpiece is considered a masterpiece of European art and one of the world's treasures.
The most famous panel within this altarpiece is the central lower panel, known as "The Adoration of the Lamb." This panel depicts a scene from the Book of Revelation (Revelation 7:9) and shows the Lamb of God being worshipped by groups of figures from the Old and New Testaments, as well as by representatives of the Church Militant and the Church Triumphant. The Lamb stands on an altar in a meadow, from which flow the four rivers of Paradise, and it is surrounded by numerous angels in adoration.
Jan van Eyck's attention to detail, use of color, and ability to manipulate light were revolutionary for his time and are exemplified in this panel. The work is renowned for its intricate iconography, complex composition, and the use of oil paint to achieve subtle gradations of color and light, creating a sense of depth and realism that was unprecedented.
The Adoration of the Lamb is a focal point of the altarpiece and is crucial for understanding the overall theme of redemption and salvation that the Van Eyck brothers depicted. The panel has been the subject of extensive art-historical research, conservation, and restoration efforts, particularly after surviving numerous thefts and wartime threats over the centuries.
The Ghent Altarpiece, and "The Adoration of the Lamb" in particular, continues to be a significant work for the study of Northern Renaissance art and the development of painting techniques. Its detailed portrayal of the natural world and the human figures within a sacred context has left a lasting impact on the history of Western art.
