Painting Description
The Ghent Altarpiece, also known as the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, is a monumental polyptych painting by the Early Netherlandish master Jan van Eyck, with contributions from his brother Hubert van Eyck, who is believed to have started the work. Completed in 1432, the altarpiece is renowned for its intricate detail, use of oil painting techniques, and its complex iconography. When the wings of the altarpiece are closed, they display a grisaille painting of the Annunciation with the figures of the Archangel Gabriel and the Virgin Mary, flanked by images of the donors, Joos Vijd and his wife Elisabeth Borluut, and representations of Saints John the Baptist and John the Evangelist.
The exterior panels are more subdued in color, rendered primarily in tones of gray and green, which was a common practice for the outsides of altarpieces, intended to contrast with the vibrant colors revealed when the panels were opened on special occasions. The upper register of the closed view shows prophets and sibyls in medallions, who are considered to have foretold the coming of Christ. The realism and attention to detail in the figures and drapery, as well as the use of light and shadow, are characteristic of Jan van Eyck's revolutionary technique.
The Ghent Altarpiece has been the subject of extensive art-historical research, and its complex iconography and pioneering style have been interpreted in numerous ways. It is also notable for its tumultuous history, having survived iconoclasm, theft, and wartime looting. The altarpiece is housed in the Saint Bavo Cathedral in Ghent, Belgium, and is considered a masterpiece of European art and one of the most influential and important works of the Northern Renaissance. Its preservation and restoration have been ongoing, with recent efforts revealing even more about the techniques and colors used by the Van Eyck brothers.
