Painting Description
The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, also known as The Ghent Altarpiece, is a complex polyptych panel painting by the Early Netherlandish master Jan van Eyck, with contributions from his brother Hubert van Eyck, who is believed to have started the work. Completed in 1432, the altarpiece is a seminal piece of Northern Renaissance art, which has been renowned for its detailed pictorial narrative and its early use of oil painting techniques. Housed in Saint Bavo's Cathedral in Ghent, Belgium, this masterwork has been the subject of extensive art-historical study, iconographic interpretation, and conservation efforts.
The altarpiece consists of twelve panels, eight of which are hinged shutters that can be opened to reveal other panels. When closed, the exterior panels show a grisaille depiction of the Annunciation along with figures of the two donors, and representations of Saint John the Baptist and Saint John the Evangelist. Upon opening, the interior panels reveal a complex, multi-tiered scene with numerous figures. The centerpiece is the eponymous Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, which features a portrayal of the Lamb of God being worshipped by groups of martyrs, prophets, apostles, and other holy figures.
The work is celebrated for its vivid use of color, intricate detail, and the lifelike representation of materials and textures. It also showcases Jan van Eyck's mastery of light and shadow, which lends a three-dimensional quality to the figures and objects. The altarpiece's iconography is rich and has been interpreted as a complex theological statement about the redemption of humanity through the sacrifice of Christ, symbolized by the Mystic Lamb.
Throughout its history, The Ghent Altarpiece has survived numerous thefts and wartime threats, including being dismantled and moved during the French Revolutionary Wars, and being stolen by the Nazis during World War II. Its cultural and historical significance is underscored by its frequent targeting and eventual recovery. The altarpiece has undergone several restorations, the most recent of which began in 2012, revealing the original vibrancy of van Eyck's palette and offering new insights into the artist's technique and the artwork's history.
The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb remains a pivotal work in the canon of Western art, attracting scholars and visitors from around the world, and continues to influence the study of Northern Renaissance art and the development of oil painting techniques.
