Painting Description
The Adoration of the Lamb, also known as the Ghent Altarpiece, is a monumental polyptych painting by the Early Netherlandish master Jan van Eyck, and possibly his brother Hubert van Eyck. Completed in 1432, the altarpiece is renowned for its intricate detail, pioneering use of oil paint, and its complex iconography. It is considered one of the most significant and influential paintings in the history of Western art. Housed in Saint Bavo's Cathedral in Ghent, Belgium, the artwork has been the subject of numerous thefts and recoveries over the centuries, adding to its mystique and historical significance.
The Ghent Altarpiece comprises a total of 24 panels, with the central panel depicting the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, from which the piece derives one of its names. This central panel shows a representation of the Lamb of God, surrounded by various groups of figures, including prophets, saints, martyrs, and righteous judges, all gathered in a verdant landscape to worship. Above this scene, the central upper panel depicts the Holy Trinity, with God the Father enthroned, holding a scepter and the globe, flanked by the Virgin Mary and John the Baptist, with the dove of the Holy Spirit above them.
Jan van Eyck's mastery is evident in the altarpiece's detailed rendering of textures, from the gleaming jewels and rich fabrics to the naturalistic landscapes and figures. His use of oil paints allowed for an unprecedented level of detail and luminosity, contributing to the altarpiece's visual impact and enduring appeal. The work's complex symbolism, drawing from Christian theology and medieval iconography, has been the subject of extensive scholarly interpretation.
The Ghent Altarpiece's history is as dramatic as its visual impact. It has survived the Protestant Reformation's iconoclasm, French revolutionary troops, and theft during World War II, among other challenges. Its panels have been dispersed and recovered on several occasions, making the altarpiece's survival and current state a testament to its resilience and the high esteem in which it is held. Today, the Adoration of the Lamb remains a masterpiece of Northern Renaissance art, attracting scholars and visitors from around the world to marvel at its beauty and complexity.
