Painting Description
"Full Moon" is a celebrated work by Scottish engineer and amateur astronomer James Nasmyth. Born in 1808, Nasmyth revolutionized the Victorian industrial world with his invention of the steam hammer. Aside from his engineering pursuits, he had a deep passion for astronomy which translated into his prominent lunar studies. His detailed and intricate studies of the moon were conducted using his homemade telescopes at his private observatory in Kent.
"Full Moon" is a significant piece in Nasmyth's collection of lunar sketches. These drawings were part of his efforts to map the surface of the moon, including its craters, mountains, and seas. Nasmyth's meticulous sketches with attention to texture and shadowing increased the understanding of the moon's surface. The "Full Moon" represents the moon in its entirety, showcasing the lunar surface features in remarkable detail.
Nasmyth's drawings were compiled and published in his book, "The Moon: Considered as a Planet, a World, and a Satellite" co-authored with James Carpenter. "Full Moon" and other sketches garnered the attention of astronomers and the public alike, contributing to a surge in moon studies in the mid-19th century.
Nasmyth passed away in 1890, leaving behind a legacy that transcends the fields of both engineering and astronomy. His work, particularly the "Full Moon" sketch, remains a remarkable intersection of art and science that informed our understanding of the lunar terrain.
