Painting Description
"Extirpation of the Plagues of Egypt;— Destruction of Revolutionary Crocodiles;—or—The British Hero cleansing ye Mouth of ye Nile" is a satirical print by the British caricaturist and printmaker James Gillray, created in 1801. The etching and aquatint, which is colored by hand, serves as a political commentary on the events of the French Revolutionary Wars, particularly the British military campaigns in Egypt. It depicts Sir Ralph Abercromby, a noted British general, as a heroic figure cleansing the Nile of French revolutionary influence, represented by crocodiles, with the assistance of Britannia.
The artwork reflects the contemporary British sentiment towards the French Revolutionary government and its military expeditions. Gillray, known for his sharp wit and critical eye, uses the biblical allusion of the plagues of Egypt to draw a parallel between the perceived threat of French revolutionary ideology and the ancient calamities. The print was published by Hannah Humphrey on March 26, 1801, at a time when Gillray's works were widely circulated and eagerly anticipated by the British public.
As a piece of historical and artistic significance, "Extirpation of the Plagues of Egypt" exemplifies Gillray's mastery of caricature and his influence on the genre. His work not only provides insight into the political climate of the time but also serves as a valuable example of the power of visual satire in shaping public opinion. The print is held in various collections, including the British Museum, and continues to be studied for its artistic merit and historical context.
