Painting Description
"Cymon and Iphigenia" is a renowned satirical print by the British caricaturist and printmaker James Gillray, created in 1797. The work is a visual commentary that parodies the neoclassical painting "Cymon and Iphigenia" (1789) by the artist Benjamin West. Gillray's version takes a humorous and critical stance on the original subject matter, which is derived from a story in Giovanni Boccaccio's "Decameron."
In the narrative of Boccaccio, Cymon, originally a coarse and uncultured young man, is transformed by the sight of the beautiful Iphigenia sleeping in a garden. This vision of beauty inspires him to educate himself and refine his manners. West's painting, which was exhibited at the Royal Academy, captures the moment of Cymon's infatuation as he gazes upon the sleeping Iphigenia.
Gillray's interpretation, however, subverts the romantic and idealistic elements of West's painting, instead infusing it with political satire and social commentary, which was typical of his work. The print features caricatured figures and includes contemporary political figures of the time, using the allegory of the original story to comment on the political and social issues of late 18th-century Britain.
The print is an example of Gillray's adeptness at using classical references to address modern topics, a hallmark of his style that made him one of the foremost satirists of his era. His work was widely circulated and often commented on the excesses and follies of aristocrats, politicians, and royalty, using wit and visual puns to engage and entertain the public.
"Cymon and Iphigenia" by James Gillray is held in high regard for its artistic merit and historical significance. It is a testament to the power of visual satire and the role of caricature in the political discourse of the time. The print remains an important piece within the collections of various museums and galleries, and it continues to be studied for its complex interplay of art, politics, and social critique.
