Painting Description
"Consulting a Sorcerer" is a watercolor painting by the French artist Jacques le Moyne de Morgues (c. 1533–1588), who is known for his work as an illustrator and for his depictions of the indigenous peoples and flora of the New World. This particular piece is part of a series of works that document the customs and practices of the Timucua, a Native American people who lived in what is now the southeastern United States. Le Moyne accompanied the French expedition to Florida led by René Goulaine de Laudonnière in 1564 and was one of the first European artists to depict scenes from the lives of the indigenous peoples of North America.
The painting "Consulting a Sorcerer" illustrates a scene in which members of the Timucua tribe are interacting with a figure assumed to be a shaman or spiritual advisor. The work is significant for its ethnographic detail and provides valuable insights into the spiritual and cultural practices of the Timucua people as perceived by a 16th-century European observer. Le Moyne's watercolors, including this piece, are considered some of the earliest visual records of Native American life by a European artist.
The artwork is notable for its intricate detail and use of color, which reflects the artist's background in botanical illustration. Le Moyne's portrayal of the Timucua reflects both the fascination and the biases of European colonizers with the exotic "new" lands and peoples they encountered. As such, while the painting is an important historical document, it must also be understood in the context of the colonial gaze that shaped its creation.
"Consulting a Sorcerer" is part of a larger collection of le Moyne's works that survived through engravings made by the Flemish engraver and publisher Theodor de Bry, who included them in his "Brevis narratio eorum quae in Florida Americae provincia Gallis acciderunt," a series of volumes known as "Grands Voyages" that depict various aspects of the New World. The original watercolors by le Moyne were lost, and today, de Bry's engravings are the primary source for le Moyne's depictions of the Timucua and their way of life. The painting, therefore, also has a complex history of transmission and reproduction, which affects its interpretation and the way it is viewed by contemporary audiences.
