Painting Description
"A Bride is Carried to the Chief" is a watercolor painting by the French artist Jacques le Moyne de Morgues, created in the 16th century. Jacques le Moyne de Morgues (c. 1533–1588) was a member of the short-lived French colony of Fort Caroline in what is now Jacksonville, Florida, and is most notable for his illustrations of the indigenous peoples of North America and the landscapes of the New World. This particular work is part of a series that depicts the life and customs of the Timucua, a Native American people who lived in northeastern Florida at the time of European contact.
The painting captures a moment in a Timucua wedding ceremony, showing a bride being carried to the chief, presumably her husband-to-be. The bride is depicted in a reclined position, being transported on a litter by several men, while other figures in the scene appear to be engaged in various activities related to the ceremony. The work is significant for its ethnographic detail and is one of the earliest visual records of Native American culture by a European artist.
Le Moyne's watercolors are invaluable historical documents that offer insight into the customs, dress, and daily life of the Timucua. They are also among the earliest images of North American flora and fauna. "A Bride is Carried to the Chief" is not only a piece of art but also an important artifact that contributes to our understanding of the interactions between European settlers and indigenous populations during the period of early colonization.
The original painting is part of the collection of the British Museum, having been acquired in the 19th century. It, along with other works by Le Moyne, provides a rare and important visual account of a time and culture that would soon be greatly altered by the forces of colonization and conquest.
