Painting Description
"The Oath in the Tennis Court" (French: Le Serment du Jeu de paume) is a highly significant, yet unfinished, work by the French painter Jacques-Louis David. The painting was intended to commemorate a pivotal event during the French Revolution: the Tennis Court Oath (Serment du Jeu de paume) of June 20, 1789. This historic moment took place in the indoor tennis court near the Palace of Versailles, where members of the Third Estate, who had been locked out of a meeting of the Estates-General, gathered to pledge not to separate until they had given France a constitution.
Jacques-Louis David, a leading artist of the Neoclassical movement and an active supporter of the Revolution, was commissioned in 1791 to capture this foundational act of defiance and unity. The painting was to be a monumental piece, measuring approximately 400 by 640 centimeters, and was intended for display in the meeting hall of the National Assembly.
David's composition is a masterful example of history painting, a genre that was considered the highest form of art at the time. It depicts a dramatic scene with Jean-Sylvain Bailly, the assembly's president, standing on a table and administering the oath to the deputies, while the painter himself is seen in the foreground, sketching the historic scene. The work is notable for its portrayal of the deputies' passionate expressions and gestures, capturing the fervor and determination of the revolutionary moment.
Although David worked on preparatory studies and a full-size cartoon of the composition, the painting itself was never completed. The political turmoil of the times, including the fall of the monarchy and David's own imprisonment during the Reign of Terror, contributed to the abandonment of the project. The surviving sketches and the large cartoon, which is held at the Musée National du Château de Versailles, provide valuable insight into David's artistic process and the iconography of the French Revolution.
"The Oath in the Tennis Court" remains an iconic symbol of the revolutionary spirit and is often referenced in discussions of French history and art. Despite its unfinished state, the work is celebrated for its ambitious scale, emotive power, and the role it played in shaping the visual legacy of the French Revolution.
