Painting Description
"Oath Taken at the Jeu de Paume" is a historically significant but unrealized painting by the French artist Jacques-Louis David. The work was intended to depict a pivotal moment during the French Revolution, specifically the event on June 20, 1789, when members of the Third Estate, who had been locked out of the Estates-General meeting, gathered at the Jeu de Paume (an indoor tennis court) in Versailles. There, they took a collective oath not to disband until they had drafted a new constitution for France, a decisive step that led to the establishment of the National Assembly.
Although David, an active supporter of the Revolution and later the official painter of Napoleon, planned this grand historical canvas, it was never completed. The artist did, however, produce preparatory sketches and related works that give insight into his conception of the scene. The Oath was to be a monumental piece, capturing the drama and republican ideals of the moment. It was commissioned by the Society of Friends of the Constitution, and its composition was to feature Jean-Sylvain Bailly, the newly elected president of the National Assembly, standing on a table and leading the deputies in their pledge, with a resolute Maximilien Robespierre among the figures present.
The incomplete status of "Oath Taken at the Jeu de Paume" has not diminished its importance in the study of David's oeuvre or the iconography of the French Revolution. The existing preparatory works are held in various collections, including the Musée Carnavalet in Paris. David's engagement with this subject reflects his commitment to the revolutionary cause and his capacity to capture the spirit of an era through his art. Despite the absence of the finished painting, the sketches and the story behind the commission continue to resonate as a symbol of the collective will for change and the birth of modern French democracy.
