Painting Description
"Napoleon at the Saint-Bernard Pass" (also known as "Napoleon Crossing the Alps") is a series of five oil-on-canvas equestrian portraits of Napoleon Bonaparte painted by the French artist Jacques-Louis David between 1801 and 1805. The paintings depict a strongly idealized image of Napoleon's daring crossing of the Alps through the Great St. Bernard Pass in May 1800, a strategic move that led to a surprise victory over the Austrians in the Battle of Marengo during the Second Italian Campaign of the French Revolutionary Wars.
In the paintings, Napoleon is portrayed mounted on a rearing horse, pointing towards the mountain summit, his cloak billowing in the wind—a romantic and heroic representation that is more emblematic than historically accurate. The composition is notable for its dynamic energy and the use of stark contrasts between the serene, snow-capped background and the vigorous figure of Napoleon. David's work served as a powerful piece of propaganda, intended to associate the First Consul with the legendary figures of Hannibal and Charlemagne, who had also crossed the Alps, thereby enhancing his heroic stature and military genius.
The first version of the painting was commissioned by the King of Spain, and subsequent versions were produced for different patrons, including Napoleon's brother Joseph Bonaparte, as well as for David himself. Each version varies slightly in detail and composition, reflecting the specific intentions of the commission and the evolving image of Napoleon's persona.
"Napoleon at the Saint-Bernard Pass" is considered one of the most famous portraits of Napoleon and a seminal work in the Napoleonic iconography. It exemplifies the neoclassical style of painting, with its emphasis on simplicity, clarity, and a moral message, while also incorporating elements of Romanticism. The paintings are held in various collections, including the Château de Malmaison, the Palace of Versailles, the Belvedere in Vienna, and the Charlottenburg Palace in Berlin.
