Painting Description
"Bonaparte, Calm on a Fiery Steed, Crossing the Alps" (also known as "Napoleon Crossing the Alps") is a series of five oil on canvas equestrian portraits of Napoleon Bonaparte painted by the French artist Jacques-Louis David between 1801 and 1805. The paintings depict a strongly idealized image of Napoleon's daring crossing of the Alps through the Great St. Bernard Pass in May 1800, a pivotal maneuver in his surprise attack against the Austrians in the Second Italian Campaign of the French Revolutionary Wars.
The series showcases Napoleon mounted on a rearing horse, pointing upwards to the mountain pass, his face calm amidst the dramatic and stormy landscape, symbolizing his role as a heroic leader with unshakable resolve. The composition is imbued with the Romantic spirit of the time, emphasizing the sublime power of nature and the exceptional qualities of the individual.
David, a fervent supporter of the French Revolution and later Napoleon, was commissioned by the King of Spain, who desired a portrait of the French leader. The first version of the painting was completed in 1801 and sent to Madrid. Subsequently, David produced four additional versions, each with slight variations, for different patrons, including Napoleon's brother, Joseph Bonaparte, and the French government.
The paintings are notable for their departure from the traditional representation of mounted leaders. Napoleon is shown riding a fiery steed, yet he is not in military uniform; instead, he wears a cloak flowing in the wind, a reference to the cloaks worn by Roman generals. The inscriptions on the rocks include the names of Hannibal and Charlemagne, previous conquerors who had crossed the Alps, thereby aligning Napoleon with these legendary figures.
"Napoleon Crossing the Alps" is considered one of David's masterpieces and a prime example of French Neoclassicism, although it incorporates elements of Romanticism. The works are held in different locations, including the Château de Malmaison, the Palace of Versailles, the Belvedere in Vienna, and the Charlottenburg Palace in Berlin. They continue to be celebrated for their powerful representation of Napoleon's mythos and their influence on the visual language of leadership and heroism in art.
