Painting Description
"Facade : Troisieme Projet (posterieur A L'application Royale De 1757) Pour L'eglise Sainte Genevieve (vers 1759-60)" is a significant architectural design by Jacques Germain Soufflot, a prominent French architect known for his contributions to the Neoclassical style. This work, translated as "Facade: Third Project (after the Royal Application of 1757) for the Church of Sainte Genevieve (around 1759-60)," represents Soufflot's third proposal for the facade of the Sainte Genevieve Church, now known as the Panthéon, in Paris.
The project was conceived after the Royal Application of 1757, a decree issued by King Louis XV of France, which commissioned the construction of a new church dedicated to Sainte Genevieve. Soufflot's design is characterized by its grandeur and elegance, embodying the principles of Neoclassical architecture with its emphasis on symmetry, proportion, and the use of classical Greek and Roman architectural elements.
The design, however, was not fully realized due to financial constraints and changes in architectural preferences. Despite this, Soufflot's "Facade : Troisieme Projet" remains a testament to his architectural vision and his pivotal role in the development of Neoclassical architecture in France.
