Painting Description
''Nativity'' by Jacques Daret is an early Netherlandish painting completed around 1434–1435. It is one of the panels of the so-called Aix Annunciation triptych, which is attributed to Daret and is considered one of his seminal works. The triptych is believed to have been commissioned by Peter Bladelin, the treasurer of the Order of the Golden Fleece, and was originally located in the chapel of a hospital in Middelburg, which Bladelin founded.
The ''Nativity'' panel depicts the birth of Jesus Christ, a central theme in Christian art. In this work, Daret presents a domestic and intimate interpretation of the scene, which is characteristic of the emerging Early Netherlandish style that combined a detailed naturalism with a strong sense of narrative and symbolism. The Virgin Mary is typically shown in a humble setting, adoring the Christ Child who lies on the ground, while Joseph is often included in a supportive role. The painting is notable for its attention to detail, use of color, and the emotional connection it establishes between the figures and the viewer.
The ''Nativity'' panel, along with the other parts of the triptych, showcases Daret's skill in handling both complex compositions and the subtleties of human expression. It reflects the influence of his master, Robert Campin, also known as the Master of Flémalle, and anticipates the work of his more famous contemporary, Rogier van der Weyden.
Today, the ''Nativity'' panel is housed in the Gemäldegalerie, Berlin, and remains an important work for the study of 15th-century Flemish art. Its provenance and the details of its commission provide insight into the patronage and religious devotion of the period, while its artistic qualities exemplify the transition from medieval to Renaissance art in Northern Europe.
