Painting Description
"Study of the frieze from the west pediment of the Parthenon by Jacques Carrey" is a collection of drawings created by the French artist and draftsman Jacques Carrey in 1674, approximately 140 years before the Parthenon sculptures were significantly damaged during the Venetian bombardment of Athens in 1687. Carrey's drawings are of immense historical value as they provide a critical record of the Parthenon's west pediment in a relatively intact state, offering insights into the original composition and details that were later lost or eroded.
Jacques Carrey, born in Troyes, France, in 1649, was commissioned by the French ambassador to the Ottoman Empire, Charles-Marie-François Olier, Marquis de Nointel, to document the ancient ruins of Athens. During his time in Athens, Carrey sketched various aspects of the Parthenon, including the metopes and the pediments. His studies of the west pediment are particularly significant as they capture the high-relief sculptures that depicted the contest between Athena and Poseidon for the patronage of the city of Athens, a central theme in the mythology surrounding the city's origins.
The drawings are executed with a keen eye for detail, reflecting the dynamic composition and the intricate interplay of figures that once adorned the pediment. Although not all of Carrey's sketches survived, those that did have been instrumental in reconstructing the original appearance of the Parthenon sculptures and understanding the extent of the damage sustained over the centuries. The studies are also a testament to the artistic skill and archaeological interest of the 17th-century European travelers who played a crucial role in documenting the classical heritage of Greece.
Today, Carrey's drawings are preserved in the Bibliothèque nationale de France and continue to be a subject of study for historians, archaeologists, and art historians alike, providing a vital link to the artistic achievements of ancient Greece and the enduring legacy of the Parthenon.
