Painting Description
"Hours of Notre Dame Prime: The Birth of Christ" is an illuminated manuscript page from the "Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry," one of the most luxurious and famous Books of Hours from the Middle Ages. The manuscript was commissioned by John, Duke of Berry, and created by the Limbourg brothers—Paul, Herman, and Jean—prominent manuscript illuminators of the early 15th century. However, after their deaths and that of the Duke, the work was left unfinished until it was later taken up by other artists, including Jacquemart de Hesdin, who is credited with some of the later contributions to the manuscript.
The "Très Riches Heures" is renowned for its rich decoration and intricate miniatures, which include a series of calendar illustrations, religious scenes, and depictions of saints. "The Birth of Christ," specifically, is a miniature that would accompany the text for the hour of Prime in the devotional sequence dedicated to the Virgin Mary, known as the Hours of Notre Dame. Prime is the first of the canonical hours celebrated at the first hour of daylight, and the associated texts and images are often reflective of themes of renewal and the beginning of Christ's life.
In "The Birth of Christ," the artists would have depicted the Nativity scene, which traditionally includes the Virgin Mary, Joseph, the infant Jesus, and various other figures such as shepherds and angels, set within a stable or a cave. The illumination would likely be executed with a high degree of skill, showcasing the opulent use of gold leaf, lapis lazuli, and other expensive pigments that characterize the manuscript's pages.
The "Très Riches Heures" is held in the collection of the Musée Condé, Chantilly, France, and remains a key work for the study of medieval art, religious iconography, and the cultural history of the late Middle Ages. Jacquemart de Hesdin's contributions to the manuscript, including his work on "The Birth of Christ," are noted for their expressive figures and intricate detail, which continue the artistic legacy established by the Limbourg brothers.
