Painting Description
"Rhea Sylvia" is a sculptural work by the renowned Italian artist Jacopo della Quercia, a prominent figure of the early Italian Renaissance. This sculpture is part of a larger narrative ensemble that adorns the Fonte Gaia, a monumental public fountain located in the Piazza del Campo, Siena's main square. Created in the early 15th century, the Fonte Gaia was commissioned to celebrate the arrival of fresh water to the city's center through an extensive aqueduct system.
The "Rhea Sylvia" sculpture depicts the mythical figure of Rhea Silvia, also known as Ilia, who is central to the foundation myth of Rome. According to Roman mythology, Rhea Silvia was the mother of Romulus and Remus, the twin founders of Rome. She was a Vestal Virgin who, in the legend, was miraculously impregnated by the god Mars, resulting in the birth of the twins. The sculpture captures a moment of her story, often portrayed with a sense of serene grace, reflective of della Quercia's style that blends Gothic and early Renaissance elements.
Jacopo della Quercia (c. 1374–1438) was a contemporary of other great artists such as Donatello and Lorenzo Ghiberti. His work on the Fonte Gaia, including the "Rhea Sylvia" relief, showcases his mastery of marble carving and his innovative approach to depicting human figures and narratives. The Fonte Gaia was one of his most significant projects, and it originally featured a series of bas-reliefs and freestanding statues that illustrated biblical and mythological scenes, contributing to the civic identity of Siena.
Unfortunately, the original sculptures of the Fonte Gaia, including "Rhea Sylvia," suffered from exposure to the elements and were replaced by copies in the 19th century. The original pieces by Jacopo della Quercia were removed to preserve what remained of their intricate detail and artistry. They are now housed in the complex of Santa Maria della Scala in Siena, where they can be viewed under protective conditions.
The "Rhea Sylvia" sculpture is an important example of Jacopo della Quercia's contribution to the development of Renaissance art. It reflects the transition from the medieval representation of figures to a more naturalistic and humanistic portrayal, which would come to define the Renaissance period. The work is celebrated for its emotional depth, the elegance of its composition, and its influence on subsequent generations of artists.
