Painting Description
"Defence of Brescia" is a monumental artwork created by the Italian renaissance artist, Jacopo Tintoretto (real name Jacopo Comin, also known as Robusti), whose prolific body of work marks a crucial juncture in the Venetian art scene.
Estimated to have been painted between 1548 and 1550, the "Defence of Brescia" is an epic depiction of the historic defence and liberation of the city of Brescia, in Northern Italy, from French besiegers in February 1512. The event transpired during the War of the League Cambrai, a conflict marked by shifting alliances amongst European powers in the early 16th century.
The composition measures approximately 11.23 x 17.47 feet (3.42 x 5.32 meters) and was intended for the Palazzo dei Camerlenghi, Venice. As a large-scale public commission, it speaks to Tintoretto’s burgeoning reputation as a master artist of his era.
In true Tintoretto fashion, the painting brims with teeming figures in energetic motion. The artist uses chiaroscuro (light-dark) effects, intense colors, and a theatrical sense of space to heighten the drama of the scene. Tintoretto’s unique artistic style succeeds in blending the active figures characteristic of High Renaissance art with the heightened drama of the Mannerist style, heralding the forthcoming advent of Baroque art.
Despite its noteworthy place within Tintoretto’s oeuvre, "Defence of Brescia" has often been overshadowed by his other masterworks and remains a gem hidden in plain sight. As of today, the painting is part of the collection of the Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice, Italy.
