Painting Description
"Lamas of China from an account of a Dutch Embassy to China 1665" is a historical illustration by Jacob van Meurs, which depicts the Lamas (Tibetan Buddhist monks) of China as encountered by the Dutch diplomatic mission to the Qing Empire in the mid-17th century. This work is part of the visual and written documentation produced from the journey undertaken by the Dutch East India Company (VOC) to establish relations with the Chinese imperial court. The embassy was led by Pieter de Goyer and Jacob de Keyser, and the account of their experiences was later published in Johan Nieuhof's "An embassy from the East-India Company of the United Provinces, to the Grand Tartar Cham, Emperor of China," which included engravings by van Meurs based on Nieuhof's drawings.
Jacob van Meurs was a notable Dutch engraver and printer of the time, and his works are significant for their detailed representation of the people and places encountered by European travelers in Asia. The "Lamas of China" illustration is particularly important as it provides a European perspective on Tibetan Buddhism and its practitioners within the context of the Qing Empire, reflecting the fascination as well as the misconceptions that Europeans held about Asian religions and cultures during the age of exploration.
The illustration and the accompanying account contribute to the historical understanding of early European interactions with China and the transmission of knowledge about Asian societies to the Western world. They are also indicative of the broader patterns of cultural exchange, orientalism, and the construction of the 'Other' that characterized European imperial and colonial endeavors. As such, "Lamas of China" is not only a work of art but also a document of historical and anthropological significance, offering insights into the ways in which distant cultures were represented and understood in 17th-century Europe.
