Painting Description
Argan and Monsieur Purgon are characters from "Le Malade Imaginaire," a play by Molière, not J.J. Grandville. Grandville was a French illustrator, known for his imaginative illustrations, but not connected to the creation of this play. "Le Malade Imaginaire" (The Imaginary Invalid or The Hypochondriac) is the last work by the French playwright Molière, first performed in 1673. It is a three-act comédie-ballet that satirizes the medical profession and the bourgeoisie's fascination with it.
Argan is the central character of the play, embodying the titular "imaginary invalid." He is a wealthy hypochondriac who obsessively indulges in medical treatments and consultations, despite being in good health. Argan's character is a critique of the medical quackery of Molière's time and the gullibility of those who, fearing death and illness, surrender themselves to the mercies of an often corrupt and ignorant medical profession. His obsession with his health blinds him to the realities of his life, including the true nature of those around him.
Monsieur Purgon is one of the medical practitioners who attends to Argan. He represents the arrogance and incompetence of the medical professionals criticized by Molière in the play. Purgon's treatments are not only ineffective but also exacerbate Argan's imaginary ailments. His reaction to any questioning of his methods or suggestions of alternative treatments is outrage, further illustrating his charlatan nature. When Argan considers ceasing his treatments, Purgon dramatically predicts dire consequences and withdraws his care, showcasing the manipulative tactics used by some within the profession to retain control over their patients and their purses.
Together, Argan and Monsieur Purgon are central to the play's comedic and satirical examination of medical practices and the societal obsession with health. Through these characters, Molière highlights the absurdity of blindly following medical advice without question and the importance of discernment and skepticism. "Le Malade Imaginaire" remains a relevant critique of the medical profession and an enduring work of comedic genius.
