Painting Description
Edward Herbert, 1st Baron Herbert of Cherbury 1610-14 is a miniature portrait by Isaac Oliver, a prominent English portrait miniature painter in the early seventeenth century. This important artwork showcases Edward Herbert (1583-1648), a significant English courtier, diplomat, philosopher, and poet during the Elizabethan and Jacobean eras. Additionally, Herbert was the older brother of George Herbert, known as one of the most influential metaphysical poets of the 17th century.
Is Oliver's miniature captures Baron Herbert of Cherbury at the peak of his diplomatic career. Rendered with intricate detail, Herbert is shown wearing the sash and star of the Order of Saint Michael, honours which he received from King Henry IV of France for his diplomatic service. These insignia showcase his high status and respect earned across European courts.
The portrait is executed in oil on parchment laid on card, a common technique for miniatures that enabled the artist to achieve a high level of detail. Its dimensions are just 5.4 x 4.3 cm, enhancing the meticulous craftsmanship involved in such small yet precise artwork.
Currently, the artwork resides in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, where it remains a significant artefact from the period, telling not only the story of one of the leading thinkers and diplomats of his time, but also showcasing the superior technical skill and artistry of Isaac Oliver.
