Painting Description
Castle Ward is an 18th-century National Trust property located near the village of Strangford, in County Down, Northern Ireland. It is known for its unique architecture and beautiful 820-acre walled demesne, which includes landscaped gardens, woodland, and the shores of Strangford Lough. The property is a significant example of the Palladian style, with a peculiar twist: the house has two distinct architectural styles, Classical on one side and Gothic on the other, reflecting the differing tastes of its original owners, Bernard Ward, 1st Viscount Bangor, and his wife, Lady Anne Bligh.
The estate's history dates back to the 16th century, but the present house was primarily constructed in the 1760s. The architect is unknown, but it is believed that the Wards may have had a hand in the design. The dual-style façade is the most striking feature of Castle Ward. The entrance front is built in a classical Palladian style with a Venetian window at its center, while the opposite side of the house displays a more romantic Gothic style with pointed windows and crenellations.
Castle Ward's interior also reflects the two styles, with the rooms on the entrance side decorated in a classical style, while those on the lough side are gothic. The property includes a stable yard, which is a fine example of Georgian architecture, and a laundry yard, both of which have been restored and contribute to the estate's historical ambiance.
The grounds of Castle Ward contain numerous walking trails, a Victorian Sunken Garden, and a picturesque Temple Water. The estate also features a number of historic structures, including a sawmill and corn mill. In recent years, Castle Ward has gained fame as a filming location for the popular television series "Game of Thrones," where it was used as the backdrop for Winterfell, the ancestral castle of House Stark.
As a National Trust property, Castle Ward is preserved for its historical significance and is open to the public, offering a glimpse into the region's past and the lifestyles of its aristocratic residents. The estate's combination of architectural styles, along with its cultural and natural heritage, make it a notable attraction for visitors interested in history, architecture, and the arts.
