Painting Description
The Ghent Altarpiece, also known as the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, is a large and complex 15th-century polyptych altarpiece in St Bavo's Cathedral, Ghent, Belgium. It is widely considered one of the most significant works of art in European history and a masterpiece of Northern Renaissance art. Executed by the brothers Hubert and Jan van Eyck, the altarpiece was completed in 1432 and is renowned for its intricate detail, use of oil paint, and innovative iconography.
The altarpiece consists of twelve panels, eight of which are hinged shutters that can be opened to reveal other panels. When closed, the exterior panels show the Annunciation along with figures of the donors and representations of the prophets and sibyls. Upon opening, the interior panels reveal a complex theological narrative centered on the redemption of humanity, with the central panel depicting the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, a symbol of Christ's sacrifice.
The work is celebrated for its unprecedented attention to detail, naturalistic figures, and vivid use of color, which were revolutionary at the time and contributed to the development of Early Netherlandish painting. The van Eyck brothers' use of oil-based paints allowed for greater manipulation of light and texture, enhancing the realism and emotional depth of the figures and landscapes.
The Ghent Altarpiece has survived numerous thefts and wartime threats, including being dismantled and moved during the Napoleonic Wars and both World Wars. It was also the subject of one of the most infamous art thefts in history when one of its panels, "The Just Judges," was stolen in 1934 and has never been recovered.
The altarpiece has been the focus of extensive art-historical research and conservation efforts. These have revealed the complexity of its construction, the brothers' artistic process, and the layers of meaning within its iconography. The Ghent Altarpiece remains a pivotal work for understanding the transition from the medieval period to the Renaissance and continues to be an object of fascination, study, and veneration.
