Painting Description
The Ghent Altarpiece, also known as the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, is a large and complex 15th-century polyptych altarpiece in St Bavo's Cathedral, Ghent, Belgium. It is considered a masterpiece of European art and one of the world's treasures. The altarpiece was started by Hubert van Eyck, who is believed to have devised the overall design before his death in 1426, and was completed by his younger brother Jan van Eyck. The altarpiece was installed in the cathedral in 1432.
One of the key panels of the Ghent Altarpiece is "The Virgin Mary," which is the central panel on the second tier of the closed view of the altarpiece. This panel depicts the Virgin Mary seated on a throne, embodying the archetype of the "Throne of Wisdom." She is portrayed in a blue robe, symbolizing her purity, and reading from a book, which is often interpreted as the Bible, signifying her piety and wisdom. The panel is remarkable for its detailed representation of textures and materials, such as the intricate brocades of Mary's gown and the realism of her flesh.
The Virgin Mary is flanked by musical angels on her right and the figure of John the Baptist on her left, with the figures of Adam and Eve on the outermost wings. When the altarpiece is opened, it reveals a complex array of panels depicting the Annunciation, saints, and the central panel of the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, from which the altarpiece derives its name.
"The Virgin Mary" panel is notable for its use of oil paint, a medium that the Van Eyck brothers mastered and popularized, allowing for a level of detail and luminosity that was revolutionary for the time. The panel's exquisite execution and the emotional resonance of Mary's serene and contemplative expression are hallmarks of Jan van Eyck's style.
The Ghent Altarpiece has a tumultuous history, having survived the Protestant Reformation, French Revolution, and two World Wars. It has been stolen several times and parts of it have been dispersed, although most of the altarpiece has been recovered and restored. "The Virgin Mary" panel, like the rest of the altarpiece, has been the subject of extensive art-historical research, conservation efforts, and has had a profound influence on the development of Northern Renaissance art.
