Painting Description
The Ghent Altarpiece: The Prophet Zacharias and the Angel Gabriel is a significant component of the larger work known as the Ghent Altarpiece, or The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, which is widely considered one of the most important pieces of Early Flemish painting. Created by the brothers Hubert and Jan van Eyck, this polyptych altarpiece is renowned for its intricate detail, use of oil paints, and complex iconography. The altarpiece was begun by Hubert van Eyck, who was commissioned to start the work around 1420, but it was completed by his younger brother Jan van Eyck after Hubert's death in 1426. The completed work was installed in the Saint Bavo Cathedral in Ghent, Belgium, in 1432.
The panels depicting The Prophet Zacharias and the Angel Gabriel are part of the altarpiece's lower register on the exterior wings and are visible when the altarpiece is closed. These two panels are part of a series that also includes the figures of the Sibyls and other prophets, all of whom are shown receiving divine messages or contemplating the coming of Christ. The Prophet Zacharias is depicted on the left panel, holding a scroll and gazing towards the Angel Gabriel, who is featured on the right panel. Gabriel is shown in the act of announcing, a moment that is part of the Annunciation scene, which is completed with the figure of the Virgin Mary on the adjacent panel.
The panels are executed with the meticulous attention to detail that characterizes the van Eycks' work, from the realistic depiction of textures and materials to the subtle use of light and shadow. The figures are set against a richly decorated architectural background that enhances the sense of depth and space. The use of oil paints allows for a luminosity and intricacy that was groundbreaking at the time and contributed to the altarpiece's reputation as a masterpiece of Northern Renaissance art.
The Ghent Altarpiece has been the subject of numerous studies and has a storied history, including several thefts and a complex conservation history. The panels of The Prophet Zacharias and the Angel Gabriel, along with the rest of the altarpiece, have been the focus of extensive restoration efforts, particularly in the 21st century, which have revealed the original vibrancy of the van Eycks' palette and confirmed the altarpiece's status as a pivotal work in the history of Western art.
