Painting Description
The Ghent Altarpiece, also known as the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, is a monumental and complex polyptych artwork attributed to the brothers Hubert and Jan van Eyck. Created in the early 15th century, it is considered a masterpiece of Northern Renaissance art and one of the most significant works of European painting. The altarpiece, when closed, displays the exterior panels of the left and right shutters, which are painted in a grisaille technique that gives the appearance of sculpture.
The exterior panels are divided into upper and lower registers. The upper register of the left wing features the Archangel Gabriel and the Virgin Mary in an Annunciation scene, while the upper register of the right wing depicts two Old Testament prophets, Zechariah and Micah, alongside two classical sibyls, the Erythraean and the Cumaean, who were believed to have foretold the coming of Christ. These figures are presented in grisaille, creating the illusion of statues set within niches.
The lower register of the exterior shutters presents a series of portraits. On the left wing, the donors, Joost Vijdt and his wife Lysbette Borluut, are depicted kneeling in prayer, while on the right wing, Saint John the Baptist and Saint John the Evangelist are shown. The figures are rendered with meticulous attention to detail and a high degree of realism, a hallmark of the van Eycks' technique.
The exterior panels are often overshadowed by the richly colored and detailed interior panels, which are revealed when the altarpiece is opened on feast days. However, the exterior shutters are of great significance in their own right, showcasing the van Eycks' skill in handling different painting techniques and their ability to imbue painted figures with a sense of sculptural form and presence.
The Ghent Altarpiece has a storied history, having survived centuries of political turmoil, theft, and wartime looting. It was commissioned for the Saint Bavo Cathedral in Ghent, Belgium, where it remains a major attraction and object of pilgrimage for art historians, scholars, and visitors from around the world. The altarpiece has been the subject of extensive conservation and restoration efforts, which have revealed the original vibrancy of the van Eycks' palette and confirmed the brothers' joint contribution to this iconic work of the Northern Renaissance.
