Painting Description
The Ghent Altarpiece, also known as the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, is a large and complex 15th-century polyptych altarpiece in St Bavo's Cathedral, Ghent, Belgium. It is widely considered one of the most significant and influential paintings in Western art history and is attributed to the brothers Hubert and Jan van Eyck. Completed in 1432, the altarpiece represents the pinnacle of Early Netherlandish painting and is renowned for its detailed iconography, pioneering use of oil paint, and intricate panel compositions.
The altarpiece consists of twelve panels, eight of which are hinged shutters that can be opened or closed to reveal different scenes. When closed, the exterior panels display a grisaille painting of the Annunciation along with figures of the two donors and representations of Saint John the Baptist and Saint John the Evangelist. Upon opening, a vibrant and complex series of panels is revealed, with the central panel depicting the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, an elaborate representation of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, surrounded by a multitude of figures, including prophets, apostles, martyrs, and hermits.
The upper register of the opened view shows a Deësis composition, with a central panel of God the Father or Christ in Majesty, flanked by the Virgin Mary and John the Baptist, and at the outer wings, Adam and Eve in their natural state. The lower register features the aforementioned central panel of the Mystic Lamb on an altar, surrounded by groups of worshippers, with the Fountain of Life in the foreground.
The Ghent Altarpiece has been the subject of numerous studies and writings, not only for its artistic qualities but also for its complex symbolism and the mysteries surrounding its creation. Hubert van Eyck, the elder of the van Eyck brothers, is believed to have begun the work, with Jan completing it after Hubert's death in 1426. However, the exact extent of each brother's contribution has been a matter of scholarly debate.
Throughout its history, the altarpiece has survived various threats, including theft, vandalism, and wartime looting. It was a target during the Reformation and the French Revolution and was famously stolen during World War II before being recovered by the Monuments Men. The altarpiece has undergone several restorations, the most recent of which began in 2012, revealing the original vibrancy of the van Eycks' palette and offering new insights into their technique.
The Ghent Altarpiece remains a touchstone for the study of the Northern Renaissance and continues to captivate scholars, art lovers, and religious devotees alike with its beauty, complexity, and enduring mystery.
