Painting Description
The Ghent Altarpiece, also known as the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, is a monumental polyptych painting by the brothers Hubert and Jan van Eyck, considered one of the most significant works of the early Northern Renaissance. Completed in 1432, this masterpiece is renowned for its intricate detail, use of oil paint, and complex iconography. The altarpiece is located at Saint Bavo's Cathedral in Ghent, Belgium. Among its many panels, the right panel interiors and exteriors are of particular interest due to their rich symbolism and artistic mastery.
The exterior of the right panels, visible when the altarpiece is closed, depicts the Annunciation scene, with the Archangel Gabriel and the Virgin Mary at the center, flanked by figures of the prophets Zechariah and Micah, and the Sibyls of Erythraea and Cumae. These figures are presented in grisaille, a technique that mimics sculpture by using shades of gray. This choice not only highlights the virtuosity of the van Eycks in imitating different materials but also sets a contemplative tone appropriate for the exterior view, which was most often seen by worshippers.
Upon opening, the interior of the right panels reveals a continuation of the central theme of the altarpiece, the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb. The lower panel on the right side features the Just Judges and the Knights of Christ moving towards the central scene of worship. Although the original panel of the Just Judges was stolen in 1934 and remains missing to this day, a reproduction based on a photograph taken in the early 20th century has been placed in its stead. The upper right panel showcases the Holy Hermits and Pilgrims, who are depicted in a dense, forested landscape, moving in procession towards the Lamb of God. This panel, like others in the altarpiece, is celebrated for its detailed rendering of nature and the individualized portrayals of the figures, demonstrating the van Eycks' mastery over texture, light, and shadow.
The right panels of the Ghent Altarpiece, both interior and exterior, are integral to the overall narrative and theological message of the work. They exemplify the transition from the Old Covenant to the New Covenant and the fulfillment of prophecy through the incarnation of Christ, themes that are central to Christian theology. The van Eycks' innovative use of oil paint allows for a level of detail and luminosity that has captivated viewers for centuries, making the Ghent Altarpiece a cornerstone of Northern Renaissance art and a profound testament to the brothers' genius.
