Painting Description
The Ghent Altarpiece, also known as the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, is a large and complex 15th-century polyptych altarpiece in St Bavo's Cathedral, Ghent, Belgium. It is widely considered one of the most significant works of the early Northern Renaissance, as well as one of the greatest artistic masterpieces of Belgium. Attributed to the brothers Hubert and Jan van Eyck, it was officially completed in 1432. The altarpiece is renowned for its intricate detail, use of oil paint, and pioneering technique.
The central panel of the Ghent Altarpiece is arguably the most famous section of this multi-paneled work and is titled "The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb." It depicts a scene from the Book of Revelation (Revelation 7:9) and features a diverse group of figures gathered to worship the Lamb of God, which stands upon an altar in a verdant field. This lamb represents Jesus Christ, and from its chest flows a stream of blood into a chalice, symbolizing the sacrifice of Jesus for humanity's sins.
Surrounding the Lamb are groups of angels, martyrs, prophets, and apostles, all rendered with meticulous attention to detail and realism that was groundbreaking for the time. The panel is a vivid tableau of devotion and religious symbolism, with each figure and object carefully placed to contribute to the overall theological narrative.
The central panel is flanked by other panels on wings that can be opened and closed, revealing different scenes when in the closed position. When opened, the altarpiece measures 11 feet 5 inches in height, and 15 feet 1 inch in width, with the central panel being the focal point of the entire piece.
The Ghent Altarpiece has been the subject of numerous studies and writings, not only for its artistic value but also for its complex iconography and the innovative techniques employed by the van Eyck brothers. It has survived a turbulent history, including thefts and various relocations during times of conflict, and has undergone extensive conservation efforts to preserve it for future generations.
The central panel of the Ghent Altarpiece remains a testament to the van Eycks' mastery of oil painting and their ability to convey profound religious themes through rich and detailed imagery. It continues to attract scholars, art enthusiasts, and religious pilgrims alike, and holds a central place in the study of Northern Renaissance art.
