Painting Description
The Ghent Altarpiece, also known as the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, is a monumental polyptych painting by the brothers Hubert and Jan van Eyck, considered a masterpiece of European art and one of the world's treasures. Completed in 1432, it is housed in Saint Bavo's Cathedral in Ghent, Belgium. The altarpiece is renowned for its intricate detail, use of color, and pioneering techniques. It consists of 12 panels, 8 of which are hinged and can be opened or closed to reveal different scenes. The exterior of the left and right panels, visible when the altarpiece is closed, showcases the Annunciation scene along with figures of prophets and sibyls, who are considered to foretell the coming of Christ, blending Old Testament prophecy with New Testament fulfillment.
The exterior panels are executed with a grisaille technique, giving them a strikingly subdued appearance compared to the vibrant colors found inside. This choice highlights the transition from the anticipation of salvation, represented in monochrome, to its realization, revealed in the full color of the interior panels. The left exterior panels depict the Archangel Gabriel announcing to the Virgin Mary that she will bear the Son of God, with the figures set against a background that suggests a church interior, symbolizing the sacred event's connection to the divine institution. The right exterior panels complement this scene with portrayals of the prophets Zechariah, Micah, and Isaiah, alongside the sibyls Erythraea, Cumaea, and Tiburtina, who are shown in contemplation or reading, signifying their role in foretelling Christ's coming.
The meticulous attention to detail, the innovative use of oil paints, and the depth of religious symbolism in the exterior panels of The Ghent Altarpiece exemplify the Van Eyck brothers' mastery and their contribution to the Northern Renaissance. The altarpiece's complex iconography and technical brilliance have fascinated art historians, scholars, and visitors for centuries, making it a pivotal work in the study of 15th-century Flemish painting.
