Painting Description
"Ratapoil" is a notable sculpture created by the French artist Honoré Daumier (1808–1879), who is primarily known for his work as a caricaturist and painter. The term "Ratapoil," which translates to "scraped rat" or "shorn rat," was a pejorative nickname used in 19th-century France to describe zealous supporters of Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte, particularly those who were part of the secret society known as the "Société du Dix-Décembre" that aimed to promote his political ambitions.
Daumier's "Ratapoil" is a satirical representation of these political agents, characterized by their aggressive tactics in canvassing support for Louis-Napoléon, who would eventually become Emperor Napoleon III. The sculpture, which dates back to circa 1850-1851, is part of a series of busts called "Célébrités du Juste milieu" that Daumier created to mock the political figures and society of his time. "Ratapoil" stands out as one of the most famous pieces in this series.
The figure of Ratapoil is depicted with exaggerated features, a hallmark of Daumier's caricatural style. He is shown with a menacing expression, a top hat, and a long, twisted mustache, which were typical of the bruisers who intimidated voters during the period leading up to the coup d'état of 1851. The sculpture is crafted in a way that emphasizes the aggressive and unscrupulous nature of these political operatives.
Originally modeled in clay, "Ratapoil" was later cast in bronze, which helped to preserve the work and facilitated its distribution. Today, it is recognized as an important example of Daumier's three-dimensional work and serves as a historical artifact that provides insight into the political climate of France during the mid-19th century. The sculpture can be found in various museum collections, including the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, and continues to be studied for its artistic and historical significance.
