Painting Description
"The Seven Deadly Sins and the Four Last Things" is a painting to Hieronymus Bosch or to a follower of his, completed around 1500 or later. Housed in the Museo del Prado in Madrid since 193, the painting depicts the sins of wrath, greed, sloth, pride, lust,, and gluttony a complex design, centered around a blindfolded man's head symbolizing ignorance or indifferent humanity.
The painting is made up of a series of small images, each representing a different sin. Each scene is contained within a circle and these circles are arranged in a larger circular pattern, creating a 'tondo' within a square panel. In each of these scenes, Bosch's direct style presents the sins with didactic intent. The central circle is dominated by the figure of Christ showing his wounds, with the Latin inscription, 'Cave Cave Deus Videt' ('Beware, Beware, God is Watching').
At the corners of the painting, the 'Four Last Things'—Death, Judgment, Heaven, and Hell—remind viewers of the consequences of straying into vice. With its detail-rich depictions, satirical narrative and symbolic elements, Bosch’s work provides a critical, moralizing view of the transgressions of mankind based on contemporary religious thought. The painting mirrors the ongoing trend in Northern European art to evaluate and moralize the human condition.
This composition is unusual in Bosch's œuvre due to its didactic concept, unlike his other works where sin appears as part of the wider narrative with religious or mythological themes. It displays the moralizing and pessimistic elements that also characterize other works by Bosch, underlining the transient and corrupt nature of worldly pleasures and the eternal punishment awaiting sinners.
As with Bosch's other works, the painting is renowned for its innovative approach, leaving a significant imprint on the Northern Renaissance painting. As an exhibition of Bosch's concerns about human vice and divine punishment, "The Seven Deadly Sins and the Four Last Things" provides an instructive warning of the consequences of turning away from virtues.
