Painting Description
Henry Ryder (21 July 1777 – 31 March 1836) was a prominent English bishop in the early 19th century, known for his influential role within the Anglican Church and his contributions to religious and social reforms. Born into a distinguished family, Ryder was the youngest son of Nathaniel Ryder, 1st Baron Harrowby, and his wife Elizabeth Terrick. He was educated at St John's College, Cambridge, where he demonstrated academic excellence and a commitment to religious studies.
Ryder's ecclesiastical career began with his ordination as a deacon in 1801 and as a priest in 1802. He quickly rose through the ranks of the Church of England, serving in various clerical positions, including as the rector of Lutterworth and the vicar of Claybrook. His dedication and leadership were recognized in 1812 when he was appointed as the Bishop of Gloucester. In 1824, he was translated to the more prestigious see of Lichfield and Coventry, where he served until his death in 1836.
Bishop Ryder was known for his evangelical zeal and his efforts to promote moral and social improvements. He was a strong advocate for the abolition of slavery and supported various charitable causes, including education and healthcare for the poor. His tenure as bishop was marked by his commitment to pastoral care and his efforts to address the spiritual and material needs of his diocese.
The portrait of Bishop Henry Ryder, engraved by T. Woolnoth, is a notable depiction of this influential religious figure. The engraving was included in The National Portrait Gallery, volume I, published around 1820 by Henry William Pickersgill. This work captures Ryder's dignified presence and his importance within the Anglican Church during a period of significant social and religious change in England.
