Painting Description
"Peer Gynt" is a five-act play in verse by the Norwegian dramatist Henrik Ibsen, written in 1867 and first performed in Oslo (then called Christiania) in 1876. The play is loosely based on the fairy tale "Per Gynt." It is a highly symbolic and surreal poetic fantasy about the adventures of the eponymous Peer Gynt, a Norwegian peasant anti-hero who is driven by the pursuit of pleasure and his own selfish interests. Ibsen wrote it in Danish, the common written language of Denmark and Norway during his lifetime.
The play critically examines the weaknesses of the Norwegian national character, exploring themes of selfishness, greed, and deceit. Peer Gynt has been described as the story of a life based on avoidance, a critique of the moral corruption of society, and Ibsen uses folklore, myth, and allegory to explore his themes, making extensive use of Norwegian folklore and the landscape to weave a rich tapestry of cultural identity and critique.
"Peer Gynt" is divided into two parts: the first part deals with Peer's youth and his adventures in Norway, and the second part covers his journeys abroad and his return to Norway. The play is known for its imaginative characters and settings, such as the troll mountain king's hall and the Moroccan desert.
The work was originally published as a book to great success, but its stage performance was delayed due to the complexity of the production. When it was first staged, it was accompanied by the music of the composer Edvard Grieg, which has since become some of the most iconic theatrical music, particularly the pieces "In the Hall of the Mountain King" and "Morning Mood."
"Peer Gynt" is considered one of Ibsen's most important and most frequently performed theatrical works, with a profound influence on the development of modern drama and has been adapted numerous times for film, radio, and television.
