Painting Description
''Divan Japonais'' is a lithograph poster created in 1893 by French artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. It is one of his most famous works and exemplifies the artist's fascination with the Parisian nightlife of the late 19th century. The poster was designed to promote the Parisian café-concert or nightclub called Le Divan Japonais, located on the rue des Martyrs. Toulouse-Lautrec was a frequent visitor to such establishments and found much of his artistic inspiration in their vibrant, often bohemian atmosphere.
The image features two figures prominently: the dancer Jane Avril, a close friend of Toulouse-Lautrec and a regular performer at the Moulin Rouge, and the writer Édouard Dujardin, depicted in the audience. Avril is shown seated in the foreground, her elegant silhouette sharply contrasted against the dark background, while Dujardin is portrayed with his top hat, absorbed in the performance. Notably absent from the scene is the performer on stage, replaced instead by the long, sinuous neck of the bass of the orchestra, which suggests the presence of music and performance without depicting it directly.
''Divan Japonais'' is characterized by its bold lines, flat areas of color, and the use of perspective that draws the viewer's eye across the composition. The work is a quintessential example of Toulouse-Lautrec's graphic style, which was heavily influenced by Japanese woodblock prints, as well as the burgeoning Art Nouveau movement. The poster's design reflects a modern and sophisticated Paris that was at the heart of the Belle Époque era.
Today, ''Divan Japonais'' is considered an iconic image of the period and is held in numerous museum collections worldwide. It not only captures the essence of Parisian society at the time but also showcases Toulouse-Lautrec's innovative approach to lithography, which revolutionized the art of poster-making and had a lasting impact on the field of graphic design.
